The Story:
Moonshining, the illegal distilling of alcohol, has a long and dark history in the hills and hollows of Appalachia. For generations, moonshiners have operated in secret, deep in the mountains, hidden from the prying eyes of the law.
The practice of moonshining began in the late 18th century, when settlers in the region began using excess corn and other crops to distill their own whiskey. It was a way for them to supplement their income, but it also allowed them to avoid paying taxes to the government, which was seen as a form of rebellion against the authorities.
To this day, moonshining remains a part of the Appalachian tradition, though it has largely been supplanted by legal distilleries. But the eerie legacy of this illicit trade still lingers in the shadows of the mountains, a reminder of the dark and dangerous side of Appalachia's history.
The Roast:
This is where we put the beans that we are drinkin' on right now. Sometimes these are just a small shipment of beans, sometimes they are a roasting experiment that went right. No matter what, we think they are dang good.
Current offerings:
🫘 A limited run of Yirgacheffe, Limu, and Nicaraguan beans (the same ones we use in our mother jones roast). This time we push them a little longer to a City Roast. (Med/light). The result is a bright citrusy cup with manageable acidity tempered by the roasty characteristics perfect for a morning cup.
🫘 Guatemalan French roast. Extra dark beans with a backbone of spicy char, and notes of rich dark bakers chocolate. Bracing and bold, with a luxurious finish.
